Cool season root and soil fertilizing is the best way to maintain year-round nutrient levels for deciduous trees, plants, and shrubs. In addition, cool season fertilizing prepares plants to grow with gusto as soon as warmer Spring temperatures return.

It is during the cool season that added nutrients are most beneficial and help promote vibrant green foliage and abundant blooms come the Spring!
How Roots Receive Nutrition During the Dormant Season
Most nutrition is absorbed and stored in tree and plant roots before they go dormant. However, below the soil line, tree and plant roots are still interacting with soil nutrients during the dormant season. The nutrition tree and plant roots receive is vital in preparing them for the next healthy leaf and bloom season.
The Role NPKs Perform
NPK stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K), the three nutrients that typically compose fertilizers. (The graphic above shows the primary role of N, P and K.) Balanced fertilization requires the right NPK mix. Not every type of tree, plant or shrub requires the same NPK mix. But not to worry since your professional landscaper or arborist would know the right blend needed based on the type of plant being fertilized.
Don’t Forget the Micronutrients
NPKs need micro-nutrients to function effectively with each feeding. As you feed plants, adding NPK’s AND Micro-nutrients promotes the vibrant green leaf growth and abundant blooms that you desire!
For example, adding Nitrogen can be a waste of time and money without also adding Molybdenum (MO). Why? Because Molybdenum is a catalyst for the Nitrogen reductase enzyme in the plant that converts Nitrogen to a form that the plant can use to build protein. Low Molybdenum = Low Response to Nitrogen. This is true for ALL plant-life whether it is grass, trees or plants.
The very term “Micro” indicates that the amounts of these elements is extremely low. In fact, in the case of Molybdenum, the levels required in the plant can be as low as 2-10 Parts Per BILLION depending on the plant! So it can be very easy to over-apply if you’re not careful! Again, here is where your professional landscaper or arborist is invaluable.
